How is Radiation Therapy Delivered?
In recent years the incidence of mesothelioma has been reported in some states of USA. This disease is caused due to fine fiber of asbestos. If any one exposed to asbestos, the mesothelioma can occur to him, if not now but later. However, every person exposed to asbestos is not affected by mesothelioma. The most important aspect of this disease is that it has no effective cure device. Whatever mode of treatment is avail be is meant for controlling it. To control the progress of the disease, radiation is one of the available processes. Such radiation therapy is given to the patient, particularly to kill the cancerous cell of the affected part. If the affected cells are killed, the disease cannot spread. Under such therapy, a high dose of radioactive ray is directed towards the affected organ. The radiation therapy can be of two types – external radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy.
For the external radiation therapy one large machine, which we call linear accelerator is used. The linear accelerator continuously deliver high dose of ray on the targeted area. The radiation is nothing but faster moving subatomic particle. The external radiation therapy is given as a course for a period like four or six week, depending upon the merit of the case. The internal radiation therapy is also known by another name, brachytherapy. Under this type of radiation rays have to travel a shorter distance. Under the external radiation therapy a radioactive substance of the size of a grain is used which we call seeds or pellets.
Apart of the radiation therapy, there is some radio pharmaceuticals to treat the disease. Radiopharmaceuticals are the drugs generally contain radioactive materials, which can be administered orally. Then the radioactive materials pass to the affected parts of our body and kill the cancerous cells.
