Types Of Radiation Therapy
In some cases of mesothelioma, radiation therapy is used as the main way of treatment. This radiation therapy is generally given to a patient, when her heath is not good and surgery cannot be performed on her. Under this mode of treatment a high level of x-ray is applied to kill the affected cells, as a result the disease cannot spread to other parts of body. There are different ways to use radiation therapy.
The external beam radiation therapy is used in most cases. Under this method an x-ray radiation is applied on the affected part of the body. You have to remember, it is not a one sitting radiation therapy. Generally the patient has to take weekly about five radiations for about three to five weeks. In many cases such radiation therapy is not found to be effective. In case of mesothelioma in lungs, such radiation therapy damage the organ ad thereby causes more problems than it solves. The second type of radiationtherapy used in treating cancer is Adjuvant radiation therapy, which is used with the surgery. Such radiation is preferred if the cancer has affected a smaller part. This affected part is removed from the body and to arrest the affected cells completely such therapy is used. The third type of radiation therapy is palliative radiation therapy. Such therapy is generally used to handle the easy symptoms of mesothelioma like bleeding, shortness of breath and swallowing.
If you are suffering from such deadly cancer of mesothelioma, you can think of radiation therapy to treat the disease. But you have to remember that radiation therapies are not free of side effects. The important side effects include fatigue, redness of skin, vomiting, nausea and infertility. However all the side effects will not be manifested in each case.
